Agua Fresca
Agua fresca is a popular, refreshing drink in Mexican and Central American cuisine, made from fruit, water, sugar, and sometimes lime juice. It’s perfect for hot weather and is commonly served at gatherings or as a snack.
There are various types of agua fresca, with the most common being:
- Agua Fresca de Jamaica – Made with hibiscus flowers, this version is tart, refreshing, and typically deep red in color.
- Agua Fresca de Pepino – Made with cucumber, lime, and sometimes mint, this agua fresca is light and very hydrating.
- Agua Fresca de Sandía – Made with watermelon, this version is sweet and very refreshing.
- Agua Fresca de Piña – Made with pineapple, often blended with a little lime and sometimes a pinch of salt.
Here’s a simple recipe for Agua Fresca de Sandía (Watermelon Agua Fresca), which is refreshing and perfect for hot weather!
Ingredients:
-
- 4 cups of watermelon (cubed and seeds removed)
- 2 cups of water
- 2-3 tablespoons of sugar (adjust to taste)
- Juice of 1 lime (optional)
- Ice (optional)
Instructions:
- Blend the watermelon: In a blender, combine the watermelon cubes and water. Blend until smooth.
- Strain the mixture (optional): If you prefer a smoother drink, you can strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve to remove the pulp.
- Sweeten: Add sugar to taste. Start with 2 tablespoons and add more if you want it sweeter. Blend again to mix.
- Add lime (optional): Squeeze the juice of one lime for an added citrusy twist, and blend again.
- Serve: Pour the agua fresca into glasses filled with ice. Garnish with a slice of lime or a piece of watermelon on the rim if you like.
